biography
Ian Fichman was born in Miami, Florida in 1978. He had a strong interest in creation beginning in his early youth, and throughout his adolescence he experimented in various art mediums. In 2002, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Studio Art from Florida State University, and in 2006 he received a second Bachelor of Science degree in Video Game Art Design from the Art Institute of California, San Diego. This eventually led him to a career in graphic design and digital illustration, but with a strong desire to get his hands dirty again, his focus returned to sculpture in 2010. He is currently working out of Studio #1 at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood, expanding his portfolio while looking for additional representation and other opportunities to display his work.
statement
My artwork is a sardonic documentary of human existence. Each sculpture is a one-of-a-kind work, uniquely assembled piece by piece. On the surface these pieces loosely represent our skeletal structure, the framework of our being, but they also point towards the assemblage of memories we use to frame our existence. The figures remain faceless, symbolizing our fellowship as human beings in the struggle we share as we attempt to progress. They are all chronicled taking different approaches, driven by their different desires but similarly seeking a correct modus operandi to obtain these desires, if there even is one.
The steel that I sculpt with is manufactured, cold, and sometimes crude, implicating our personas. The item being held, the stone, is smooth and organic, referring to our ambitions. Within the extreme contrast of these two materials and the juxtaposition that I place them in, I attempt to demonstrate the inevitable realization that our most authentic desire is actually desire itself.
objective
To create an army.
